The patented Airflow guarantees a definitive restoration of the site
The in situ aeration of MSW landfills has been applied worldwide in order to enhance the stabilization processes of the biodegradable organic substance in the landfill body, with promising results in terms of improvement of the quality of the current and long-term emissions. The Airflow technology implemented by Spinoff is a promising option for the reduction of long-term environmental impacts of landfills and for the remediation of old landfills by means of low-pressure in situ aeration. The oxygen contained in the air creates adequate conditions to modify, from anaerobic to aerobic, the conversion process of the biodegradable organic compounds present in the waste mass. Therefore, the organic substance is converted into carbon dioxide, water and oxides (nitrates, sulphates, phosphates, etc.).
The Airflow system calls for the insufflation of low-pressure air in the waste mass, the simultaneous aspiration and treatment of gas and leachate drainage, where applicable.
The Airflow technology promotes the reduction of odor and ammonia concentration in leachate together with a decrease of the time required for waste stabilization and settlement thanks to quicker reaction kinetics.
The Airflow technology is applied in securing and in the remediation of MSW and other similar types of landfill. This technology can be used as a preliminary intervention for Landfill Mining or as a complete landfill remediation intervention.
The design of a full-scale Airflow plant requires the evaluation of specific parameters determined through preliminary tests (waste and leachate characterization, aeration and pumping field tests, etc.) and applying a mathematical model.
An Airflow plant comprises blowers for air injection and gas extraction, aeration and monitoring wells, monitoring and control devices, an automatic control station equipped with gas analyzer and a PC-PLC system, an exhaust air treatment system.
